About Betsy

Betsy Buckner is a Colorado-based artist with over 20 years of experience, known for her bold, expressionistic animal portraits and vibrant depictions of nature. Specializing in large-scale pieces, no smaller than 20”x20”, Betsy brings life to her subjects with loose brushstrokes and a colorful, energetic palette. Her favorite subjects include animals, landscapes, florals, and portraits—anything living that sparks joy and emotion. Unlike the rigid structure of buildings and objects, she finds inspiration in the dynamic, unpredictable energy of the natural world.

Betsy’s creative process is anything but conventional; she often works on the floor, using water and various mediums to let the paint flow naturally and create spontaneous, eye-catching effects. Influenced by artists like John Nieto, her work combines expressionism and impressionism, with mediums ranging from acrylics and oils to watercolors and pastels. While her paintings do not aim to deliver deep commentary on the world, Betsy’s goal is simple: to bring moments of happiness and smiles to those who view her work. Her colorful, dynamic art captures the wild beauty of animals like foxes, bears, and bison, making each piece an unforgettable celebration of life.
